Escape Lounges Spotlight – it’s time to branch out in Portland

Discover our newest Escape Lounge, in Portland International Airport. Inspired by the area’s natural and architectural heritage - from preserved moss feature walls to circular wooden pergolas – the space is designed to be a relaxing pause before your flight, where you can enjoy the area’s famous Asian-inspired cuisine, alongside coffee and beer from award-winning local suppliers.

A space where industrial heritage meets the great outdoors
Inspired by Portland’s Pearl District, with its history of warehouses and light industry, the entrance of our newest lounge makes heavy use of steel, glass and wood. The backdrop to the reception desk is a wall of timber cross-sections, in reference to Portland’s former nickname ‘stumptown’, so-called because of the city’s timber industry and the vast expanses of forest that surround it.
A love of the outdoors is a central theme within the lounge, from the elevator lobby area that contains a preserved moss feature wall, to the elevator itself, which is lined floor-to-ceiling with panels of coloured roses, showcasing Portland’s reputation as the ‘city of roses’. The stairway to the mezzanine level, meanwhile, combines a preserved moss wall with stunning faux green panels to create a sense of calm.
Natural wood is another motif throughout the lounge. The walkway at the top of the stairs to the mezzanine level is lined with a wood-screen wall that curves round to guide guests into the lounge. In the main lounge, two circular wooden pergolas represent the outdoor wooden pavilions often seen in the Pacific Northwest. The structures – in which glass leaves hang from the ceiling – define the main walkways in the lounge, helping to move guests between each zone.

Carefully designed zones where you can socialise, relax or work
The lounge is carefully designed in zones to suit every traveller’s needs. The central bar area is spacious and open, filled with light from both the skylight above and the centrally placed arch window that looks onto the airport concourse below. Muted greens and oranges, combined with the light-filled space, evoke the Pacific Northwest’s love of the outdoors.
The lounge’s multi-use zone is perfect for reading, napping or working. Booths with closable doors are ideal for working or holding meetings, but they also double up as quiet family spaces – the desks fold down into beds with sheer drapes that can be drawn across for privacy. Our Portland lounge also has two showers if you want to freshen up before your flight.

Local suppliers and influences combine for a true taste of Portland
The food menu for our Portland lounge has been created using inspiration from local cuisine. The city is known for its Asian food scene, so you’ll find lots of Asian influences in different dishes including Asian-baked chicken wings and sweet chilli & ginger noodles.
The drinks menu, meanwhile, is packed with favourites from local suppliers. Award-winning Portland brewery Great Notion Brewing supplies IPAs and stouts, as well as non-alcoholic hop water and soda. The coffee in the lounge comes from Coava, a northwest coffee roaster committed to long term, sustainable partnerships with coffee producers.

Carefully curated for a unique view of Portland before you fly
The finishing touches to the lounge have all been sourced locally. The lights are made by a Portland-based company, while all the artwork displayed is by local Portland artists and craftspeople, including abstract painter and textile artist Jen Crowe; improvisational and abstract painter Mark Dunst; and visual artist and photographer Heléna Dupre Thompson.
Located in Terminal D, between Gates 8 and 10, the newly opened Escape Lounge in Portland International Airport is open between 3.30am and 11.30pm, seven days a week.
